The Coln Valley Herd

Coln Valley Heifers Our herd consists of about 40 breeding females.

Our female selection criteria emphasises conformation, fertility, soundness and all the excellent mothering qualities normally found in the shorthorn. Unassisted calving ranks high in that list for us.

We normally select 1 - 2 bull calves at weaning to bring on for sale. Conformation and potential soundness are the main criteria as all our females have the genetic potential for producing quality bulls. We aim to take these bulls to Perth or Carlisle if not sold privately at home. We have had the top price selling bull at Carlisle in two of the four years they have been selling Beef Shorthorns in their Spring pedigree sale. It is hoped that a similar market can be developed in the South as the southern commercial breeders become more aware of what the beef shorthorn can do for them and the number of pedigree breeders in the south continues to grow so rapidly.

Herd health is also a priority for us. All animals going to sales have the full range of tests before leaving the farm.
